On Sunday last 08th March Glaslough Harriers hosted their annual road races. After a shaky start the weather played its part in helping to make the event a great success and enjoyable day was had by all. There was a fantastic turnout both for junior and senior races. For some of our younger athletes who train in the Oakland Centre this was their first road race and they did themselves and their coaches proud. By David Keelaghan Family and friends of James Finnegan have reacted with shock to the tragic news of his death this past Sunday, December 7th in the city of Gwangju, South Korea. From Tiravera, Glaslough, his death occurred shortly after 11:53 pm Korean time after he was struck by a taxi while attempting to cross the road close to his home in Gwangju. He was 27 years old. On Sunday night last in the Pillar House Hotel in Glaslough local man Paudge Colleran was crowned “Mayor of Glaslough” after an eight month fundraising effort which saw in excess of €32,000 raised for much needed improvement works at Glaslough National school. Gardai in Monaghan recorded a significant success in their efforts to thwart the supply of illegal drugs when cannabis plants worth about €40,000 were found at a property in the Glaslough area on Friday last. The illicit substance was being cultivated in a specially adapted garage on the property of a house in the area, after a search warrant had been obtained as part of an ongoing operation, Superintendent Noel Cunningham told the Northern Standard. GLASLOUGH TOPS IN TIDY TOWNS

By Aaron Mc Nicholas Glaslough has been named the County Monaghan winner in the 2011 National Tidy Towns Competition. The picturesque North Monaghan village has repeatedly been a contender in the competition and claimed the National Title in 1978. This year it was awarded 294 marks out of 400, scoring particularly well in areas such as Overall Development Approach and Built Environment.
