A planned upgrade of the R181 road has the potential to deliver a significant economic boost to enterprises in the Mid Monaghan area, Fine Gael councillor Seán Gilliland told Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council. The project, which will see the widening of the regional road south of Shantonagh from Bellatrain to Lisnadarragh, and north of Shantonagh from Drumillard to Crossduff, received a formal granting of permission under Part VIII of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act at Monday’s meeting. Senior Planner Adrian Hughes stated that the project would ...

COUNCILLOR TREANOR STANDS ALONE IN OPPOSITION TO “TOTALLY BIASED” STRATEGY

Independent councillor Seamus Treanor launched a strong attack on the migrant integration strategy presented to Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council. The only councillor to vote against the adoption of the strategy, he objected to it as “totally biased in favour of mass immigration and open borders”. After the presentation on the strategy made by Social Integration Officer Bernie Bradley to the meeting, Councillor Treanor read a statement to the meeting in which he continued: “It [the strategy[ fails to mention the negative impact of uncontrolled immigration and open orders. ...

FÁILTE GO MUINEACHÁN?

Comment The adoption by Monaghan Co Council on Monday of a new Migrant Integration Strategy is a timely step in the address of an important social issue. In a year in which the Covid-19 pandemic has become the ubiquitous concern, the need to respect the rights and dignity of all human beings and to ensure that unity rather than division hallmarks the way in which our increasingly cosmopolitan demographic knits together has demanded its own place in public preoccupations. The Black Lives Matter campaign has made its voice heard throughout the ...

BRAGAN BOG HOLDS ITS SECRETS 45 YEARS AFTER THE DISAPPEARANCE OF COLUMBA MCVEIGH

Michael Fisher The bog at Bragan mountain continues to hold its secrets. Five searches carried out by forensic investigators from the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims’ Remains have so far failed to find the body of Co. Tyrone teenager Columba McVeigh. In November 1975, the 19 year-old from Donaghmore was abducted by the IRA, murdered and secretly buried in the bogland near Carrickroe. Now, on the 45th anniversary of his disappearance, his family have renewed their calls for any information that could lead to the discovery of their ...

CAVAN SPOIL PARTY FOR MONAGHAN ONCE MORE

John Graham reports A more resilient Cavan scored something of a shock, but overall deserved victory over Monaghan by the minimum margin after extra time in this closely contested and at times quite spectacular championship opener that was played in difficult conditions in Clones on Saturday afternoon last. This is the second year in a row that Cavan have scuppered Monaghan’s Ulster championship aspirations, but in any analysis Monaghan will have to look deep within themselves as to how they let this one get away. Following a shaky opening ten minutes ...

MONAGHAN FAILED TO LOCKDOWN LEAD AT CLONES

COLM SHALVEY “Are they out?” That innocuous three-word question from Malachy Clerkin’s wife to The Irish Times sportswriter started his Monday column that succinctly summed up Monaghan supporters’ frustration at watching from afar as the county made a painful exit from the championship last Saturday. A miserable, wet early afternoon at a St. Tiarnach’s Park considerably emptier than it would have been for a McKenna Cup shadow-boxing exercise made for the strangest backdrop to the latest instalment of the age-old rivalry between Monaghan and Cavan, but the game would eventually produce ...
