A planned upgrade of the R181 road has the potential to deliver a significant economic boost to enterprises in the Mid Monaghan area, Fine Gael councillor Seán Gilliland told Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council. The project, which will see the widening of the regional road south of Shantonagh from Bellatrain to Lisnadarragh, and north of Shantonagh from Drumillard to Crossduff, received a formal granting of permission under Part VIII of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act at Monday’s meeting.

Senior Planner Adrian Hughes stated that the project would involve the widening and upgrading of the Lough Egish-Shercock road essentially centred around Shantonagh. The proposal had been through public consultation and there had been no third party submissions. Mr Hughes said he was recommending that the project proceed. Councillor Gilliland in proposing approval of the works said this was one of the most important roads in its Municipal District area and in the county outside of the N2 because of its economic importance and its centrality to a large number of commercial enterprises and…
