FUNDING ALLOCATED FOR ST MACARTAN’S CATHEDRAL REFURBISHMENT
Important refurbishment and conservation work planned for St Macartan’s Cathedral in Monaghan Town received funding of €100,000 this week. The Government’s Historic Structures Fund will assist in the works, which will entail work to the spire, pinnacles tower and south transept of the cathedral, with internal high-level plaster repairs. Two other places of worship in the local area have also been successful with applications to the fund. ROAD FATALITY AT KNOCKACONNY
A man in his 50s died in a two-vehicle road traffic collision which occurred on the N12 at Knockaconny outside Monaghan Town on Saturday morning last, March 11. The man who received fatal injuries was the sole occupant of one of the vehicles involved in the incident. His body was removed from the scene for post mortem examination. Muineachán Le Gaeilge have called for the establishment of a centre for the Irish Language Community in Monaghan. There are now four Gaelscoileanna in the county, as well as Coláiste Oiriall at secondary school level, making Monaghan the county with the highest percentage of children attending Irishmedium education on the island, outside of the Gaeltacht.
