Current Bishop of Down and Connor, Most Reverend Noel Treanor from Tyholland in Co Monaghan has been elevated to Archbishop and appointed by Pope Francis as the Vatican’s ambassador to the European Union. Co Monaghan people were this week asked to use the Minor Injury Unit at Monaghan Hospital or avail of the services of their local GPs for non-urgent medical care because of severe delays being experienced at Cavan Hospital’s Emergency Department. The public have been asked not to attend at Cavan Hospital “except in cases of real and genuine emergency”. A former British soldier has been convicted of the manslaughter of 23-year-old Aiden McAnespie on the Monaghan-Tyrone Border at Aughnacloy in February 1988. A flow of tributes has followed the news of the passing of former GAA President and Monaghan county football team manager Seán McCague. Mr McCague, from Stracrunnion, Scotstown, passed away on Thursday November 24 last at St Mary’s Hospital in Castleblayney. He was aged 77. In addition to his achievements as a player, manager and administrator in Gaelic football, he has been remembered as an educationalist and for the role he played in the campaign to preserve services at Monaghan Hospital. ALMOST €780,000 FOR OUTDOOR PROJECTS IN CO MONAGHAN
Minister for Rural and Community Development, local TD Heather Humphreys, has announced almost €780,000 in funding for outdoor recreation projects in Co Monaghan. The major investment, under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme, came as Minister Humphreys launched Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors – the country’s first ever national outdoor recreation strategy. In Monaghan, funding of €500,000 will be invested in upgrading the trails on Black Island, Lough Muckno.
