Emyvale furniture designer Barry Todd has been announced as a recipient of an Emerging Maker Residencies & Training Award by the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland at a ceremony in Dublin’s National Gallery. A media release stated: Barry’s Studio Kinnard workshop designs with excellence in mind, using unique highquality hardwood furniture with a focus on clean lines and considered details. Barry’s recent work has been an exploration of curves and carving to enhance the wood’s natural features, aiming in every piece to craft simple, expressive forms that are pleasing to the touch and comfortable to use. Established in 2009, Future Makers is a Design and Crafts Council of Ireland initiative which recognises talent, potential and creativity.

Its aim is to support the next generation of makers, designers and craftspeople at an early stage in their careers and enable them to move from training into enterprise. Future Makers is one of Europe’s largest prize-funded award programmes, with a total fund of €25,000. Divided into student and emerging practitioner categories, 26 prizes are awarded to emerging makers, students and recent graduates in ten categories.

The award winners come from a broad range of disciplines, including ceramics, fashion design, textiles, furniture making, homewares and jewellery design.
