TRIBUTES FLOW FOLLOWING PASSING OF FORMER GAA PRESIDENT AND MONAGHAN MANAGER SEÁN MCCAGUE

A flow of tributes has followed the news of the passing of former GAA President and Monaghan county football team manager Seán McCague. Mr McCague, from Stracrunnion, Scotstown, passed away on Thursday November 24 last at St Mary’s Hospital in Castleblayney. He was aged 77. In addition to his achievements as a player, manager and administrator in Gaelic football, he has been remembered as an educationalist and for the role he played in the campaign to preserve services at Monaghan Hospital.

Mr McCague is survived by wife Bernie and children Paula, Nuala, Martha, Freda and Emma; grandchildren Cian, Tiarnán, Aideen, Aoife, Jarlath, Briana, Trea, Seán, Aifric, Diarmuid, Conor and Nessa; sisters Margaret Mary (Mangan), Rosemary (Manley) and Frances (Martin); brothers Hugh, Eugene, Rev Brendan and Gerard; sons-in-law Keith McGonnell, Declan Smyth, Colm Mac Cinna and Colm Flanagan, and wider family. He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Rose, and by brothers Gabriel and Frankie.

Mr McCague’s Funeral Mass took place at St Mary’s Chapel, Urbleshanny at noon on Saturday last. His distinguished contribution to the GAA began as a player with Scotstown GFC, whom he helped to a Co Senior Football Championship win in 1974 before…
