GOREY COMMUNITY COLLEGE 1-13PATRICIAN HIGH SCHOOL CARRICKMACROSS..0-09 COLM SHALVEY REPORTS Patrician High School, Carrickmacross fell short in their bid for a second All-Ireland PPS Senior Football ‘B’ title when they lost out to a ruthless Gorey Community School side in Portarlington last Saturday. MacLarnon Cup winners Patrician were always playing catch-up after falling six points down in the opening quarter, as a powerful start sent Gorey CS on their way to their first Paddy Drummond Cup. The High School were much improved in the second half as they attempted to wipe out ...

COLM SHALVEY Monaghan GAA hosted their first Northern Standard-sponsored Annual Awards night since 2020 at the Four Seasons Hotel last Friday. The presentation night, sponsored once again by The Northern Standard, had to be postponed on a couple of occasions last year, with Friday’s event doubling up and seeing the 2020 and 2021 awards finally handed out. The long-delayed event was run on a less formal basis than in previous years, but Scotstown’s Gráinne McElwain was there as usual on MC duty. The 2021 award winners included: Senior Footballer Kieran ...

UNDER-20 PHILLY MCGUINESS CUP COLM SHALVEY REPORTS Monaghan’s U-20 footballers claimed a second consecutive narrow win in the Philly McGuinness Cup when they finished strongly to pip Armagh in a five-goal thriller in Inniskeen last Saturday. The momentum swung dramatically on a couple of occasions during this game, where a brace of goals towards the end of the first half put Monaghan in the driving seat, only for Armagh to dominate the third quarter to go from five points down to five ahead. Monaghan outscored Barry O’Hagan and Oisín McConville’s side by ...

Monaghan need to take something from ‘Fortress Ballybofey’ COLM SHALVEY REPORTS Monaghan will be chasing that elusive winning feeling and crucial Allianz NFL points when they travel to Ballybofey to take on Donegal this Sunday. Monaghan haven’t won a game since they beat Donegal in the McKenna Cup Final in late January – drawing two and losing two in the league to date – so they need to put points on the board to move towards securing a ninth year in Division One. Donegal have also had a mixed bag of a ...

MONAGHAN 1-12KERRY 3-14Venue: Pairc Grattan, Inniskeen Monaghan’s wait for a first win of their Allianz NFL Division One continued with a sobering defeat against table-toppers Kerry at a blustery Inniskeen last Sunday. Monaghan failed to put wind advantage to good use in the first half and they were made to pay, as a ruthless Kerry side who hit just three wides in total stretched their unbeaten league run to 12 games. The game was effectively decided in a dominant spell either side of half-time by Kerry, who outscored Monaghan by 2-7 ...
INNISKEEN FOOTBALL SHOWDOWN FALLS FLAT
GAA, General News, Sport, Sports News »
TALKING POINTSColm Shalvey Thousands of supporters made their way to Inniskeen last Sunday, but a flat performance from Monaghan meant the occasion didn’t live up to its billing. Páirc Grattan can produce a great atmosphere, particularly when it’s close to capacity as it was on Sunday, but save for a bright start that saw Kieran Hughes and Kieran Duffy kick early points, Monaghan gave the sizeable home support little to shout about. Kerry hit the last four points of the half, into the wind, as they began to play the game ...
MONAGHAN SEE GLASS HALF-FULL?

TALKING POINTSColm Shalvey Armagh’s rich vein of form heading into Saturday’s Ulster derby meant this looked like a very tricky fixture for Monaghan, but one point felt like scant reward for their efforts in testing conditions. Monaghan got an awful lot right in their first-half performance, pressing Armagh high up the pitch, aggressively penning the home side in on their kick-out and attacking at pace when they turned them over, but their erratic finishing stopped them from putting the game beyond doubt. Monaghan created shooting chances almost at will in the ...

Monaghan need to find target against Kerry COLM SHALVEY REPORTS Monaghan face another serious test of their credentials when they welcome Kerry to Inniskeen this Sunday in the Allianz National Football League Division One. Having dug out a draw away to an in-form Armagh, Monaghan now face a Kerry side who have gone top of the league on score difference as they bid for a third consecutive title. It’s an unlikely renewal of rivalries for Séamus McEnaney in his second term with Monaghan and Jack O’Connor, who has returned to Kerry for ...

TALKING POINTSColm Shalvey The very early evidence of the first round – which produced one-point wins for Monaghan and Armagh and a draw between Roscommon and Tyrone – suggested a close campaign was in store, but Sunday’s results point towards a twotier split within the Allianz National Hurling League Division 3A. The comprehensive manner of the second-round wins for Armagh, Roscommon and Tyrone suggest that those three teams will be duking it out for promotion, most likely leaving Monaghan, Louth and Warwickshire to battle to stay in the division. Monaghan had ...

COLM SHALVEY REPORTS MONAGHAN……0-13ARMAGH………..4-22 Monaghan were unable to build on their opening-round win in the NHL Division 3A as they fell to a heavy defeat to Armagh in Inniskeen last Sunday. Both teams had started the campaign with one-point wins, but the prospect of a close finish in this one was wiped out as Armagh took complete control either side of half-time. Monaghan, who made just one change from their away win over Warwickshire, led by 0-3 to 0-2 in the tenth minute as Armagh’s attack took some time to find their ...
