WAFER-THIN MARGINS AS THE RACE HEATS UP

Colm Shalvey Monaghan’s eighth draw in their last 15 competitive games comes as little surprise, given their recent history. Monaghan should be a little further on in their preparations than Tyrone at this stage of the year as the Red Hands play catch-up, but no matter when these sides meet, there tends to be little between them. Over the teams’ last nine meetings, the aggregate score is Monaghan 3-115 Tyrone 3-120, leaving the average margin at just over half a point per game. Goals have been few and far between so ...

COLM SHALVEY REPORTS It’s a case of out of the frying pan and into the fire in Monaghan’s Allianz NFL campaign as they go from travelling to the All-Ireland champions to hosting 2021 runners-up Mayo in Clones this Sunday. These are two of the six Division One teams who go into this weekend on the back of draws in the first round, as Mayo rallied in the closing stages to secure a dramatic draw with Donegal. On a weekend where goalkeepers hit the headlines, Mayo’s number one Rob Hennelly made two ...

MONAGHAN UP FOR THE CUP

COLM SHALVEY Monaghan got their hands on the first silverware of the year at Healy Park last Saturday, but it wouldn’t have taken long after the McKenna Cup presentation for attentions to turn to another trip to Omagh to take on All-Ireland champions Tyrone in the first round of the Allianz NFL this Sunday. JEKYLL AND HYDE Monaghan looked like a doubledigits victory wasn’t beyond them when they led by 1-10 to 0-4 early in the second half, but they were left clinging on for a one-point win in the end ...

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD FOR MONAGHAN FOOTBALLERS

COLM SHALVEY Monaghan’s senior men have now drawn more than half of their last 13 competitive games, with seven of those finishing level after 70 minutes. That run goes back to just after the lengthy 2020 shutdown, which was followed by draws against Meath and Cavan. Further stalemates followed against Donegal, Tyrone and Galway in 2021, while two of the first three games of 2022 have finished level, away to Derry and Armagh. Two of those games were decided by extra-time (the loss to Cavan and the win over Galway), but ...

NEW FARNEY COACH SHANE RICE HOPING TO HIT THE GROUND RUNNING

LGFA JACK MADDEN Who knows when the inside GAA world was first sworn to secrecy? From the outside there is so little to hide, but still for the majority of us, it remains hidden. Out of touch. You can’t help but feel the inside of a dressing room has all the drama of a battlefield. You creep up, peak through the door, and then inside everything freezes like a “Toy Story” scene, stunned by even the slightest level of human interaction. A fear of exposure. And yet, every so often, someone different ...

MCENANEY ‘EXPERIMENTED’ AS MONAGHAN DIG OUT RESULTS

Colm Shalvey Monaghan can reflect on a productive weekend after shuffling their pack for last weekend’s busy schedule in the Bank of Ireland Dr. McKenna Cup. While some counties saw their group campaigns spread over a week or more, Monaghan’s Section C fixtures were squeezed into the space of 43 hours, which saw 31 players get game-time in the draw with Derry and the win over Fermanagh. Those results were enough to earn Monaghan a place in next Tuesday’s semi-finals, with the pairings yet to be decided, but more importantly, the ...

COLM SHALVEY REPORTS Monaghan will start their 2022 Allianz NFL campaign with a derby against All-Ireland champions Tyrone in Omagh on the last Sunday in January. Monaghan’s eighth consecutive spring in Division One, with the league set to return to a full sevengame series, will begin with a repeat of the 2021 Ulster SFC Final. Three of Monaghan’s four away games are against Ulster rivals, with Séamus McEnaney’s side also set to travel to Armagh (February 19) and Ballybofey to face Donegal (March 13). ALL BORO ON BOARD WITH MONAGHAN GAA FOR 2022

COLM SHALVEY The long-delayed official launch of All Boro Floor Services, New York as Monaghan GAA’s main sponsor took place late last month. All Boro have been the county’s main sponsor since October 2020, replacing Investec, but the sponsorship launch had long been postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions until it finally went ahead on December 27 with a small gathering in the Four Seasons Hotel, Monaghan Town. It was an emotional night for the family of the late Philip Traynor, who sadly passed away suddenly last July. Philip’s children Courtney, Ryan, ...
