• Michael McDonnell THE NORTHERN STANDARD received confirmation from the HSE yesterday afternoon that Ballybay Community Crèche was closed earlier in the day after a “number of linked cases of VTEC infection” — a form of what is commonly termed E. coli had been detected at the facility. The crèche will remain closed pending screening of all children and staff for possible VTEC (the short for verotoxigenic E. coli) infection, and the HSE has also confirmed that the closure was put in place….

A Castleblayney man made history at the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society Balmoral Show last Friday. A cow owned by James Lambe from Shantonagh became the first animal of the Dairy Shorthorn breed to win the highly prestigious dairy interbreed championship in Balmoral’s 150- year history. One of them is the Sliabh Beagh Protectors from Urbleshanny National School in Scotstown. Coin designs by two Monaghan students have been selected as regional winners in a competition to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Central Bank.
