Michael Fisher The Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, Cllr Seamus Coyle, has said he is horrified by comments made in a recent radio interview that the ‘drink culture’ and ‘litter’ at Clones during the Ulster final meant it was not a place to bring your children. TYDAVNET SHOW LAUNCH SETS SCENE FOR 68TH EVENT ON AUGUST 15TH
By Veronica Corr Wednesday night last saw a packed attendance congregate for the launch of the 68th Tydavnet Show in the community centre of the village that bears the same name. Gerard Sherlock acted as MC on the evening and he pointed out that preparation for the next show begins when the annual show ends — there are monthly meetings etc., but the launch acts as a kickstart in the run-up to the event itself. This year’s chairperson Paula Treanor welcomed distinguished guests including Jim Harrison and Raymond Brady of ...
A DIFFERENT KIND OF WARMTH!
THe old meeting hall was probably a wee bit chillier than might have been expected for the time of year — Rev David Nesbitt even apologised for the weather’s lack of cooperation on this count! — but we were only a few bars into the opening song when it became clear that the historic Cahans building would be filled with a different kind of warmth over the next hour and a half or so. And it wasn’t long before the smallish but cheerful attendance and performers alike where enjoined in ...
PRESSURE’S ON MONAGHAN …BUT ONLY JUST!
KEVIN ÓG CARNEY REPORTS ‘Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin’ – there’s no place like home. No place like the provincial championships as Cavan and Donegal supporters would have you know this week. Monaghan and Armagh are where they are. And this Saturday’s (7pm) crunch secondround Qualifier in Clones presents as much an opportunity as a challenge for both crews. To paraphrase another phrase, pressure is for tyres. However, there’s little doubt but that all belonging to the Monaghan and Armagh camps will be hot under collar this weekend ‘till ...

Monaghan ‘Armed’ for battle in local derby COLM SHALVEY COMMENTARY Monaghan face another Ulster derby when Armagh make the familiar journey to Clones for Saturday’s All-Ireland SFC Round 2 Qualifier. Armagh have been infrequent visitors to Clones in recent years, with their first-round extra-time win over Down being their first time to clear the Ulster first round since 2002 All-Ireland-winning captain Kieran McGeeney took charge of his native county for the 2015 campaign. This is Armagh’s third game at St. Tiarnach’s Park this month, however, after their provincial semi-final against Cavan went ...

CONNOLLY WALKS OUT OF INAUGURAL COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING OVER ALLOCATION OF POSITIONS
INDEPENDENT Monaghan County Councillor Paudge Connolly walked out of the Council’s Annual General meeting last Friday in protest at how the process of allocating positions on the Council had been decided by the three political parties, which, he said, had excluded the three independent members. The County Council was holding its first meeting of newly elected representatives following the recent local elections. Meetings administrator Ms Carmel Thornton read out the election results by electoral area and the resultant declarations. Cllr Connolly left the chamber after demanding, unsuccessfully, that the meeting ...
ORTHOPAEDIC CLINIC IN MONAGHAN REMAINS OPEN
Michael Fisher The arrangements for orthopaedic outpatient clinics at Monaghan Hospital are unchanged, according to Senator Robbie Gallagher. Responding to him on Tuesday, the RCSI Hospitals Group outlined the factual position and stated that the service remained open, he said. The Fianna Fáil representative wrote to the administrators on May 16th in relation to orthopaedic outpatient clinics in Monaghan. ...
