THE former owner of a licensed premises in Monaghan town has re-entered the property and challenged its current registered owners to seek a High Court injunction to have him removed. EMMA ENJOYS SUCCESSFUL MONAGHAN FLEADH

Emma McCague from CCE Baile Mhuineachán, with some of the awards and medals that she won at the Co Monaghan Fleadh Cheoil, that was held on 1st June at Monaghan Education Campus. Emma collected awards for winning the U12, Fiddle Slow Air, Tin Whistle, Comhrá, Story Telling and Scéalaóicht. She also was runner-up in the Fiddle competition. Emma will now go on to represent Co Monaghan at the Ulster Fleadh Cheoil which is being held in Castlewellan, later in the summer.

The Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation and Local TD, Heather Humphreys, met the New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern yesterday. Minister Humphreys is currently on a 10 day Trade Mission to New Zealand with a number of Irish Companies including Combilift. The Minister took the opportunity to present the Prime Minister with the gift of a handwoven scarf by local Monaghan Designer, Liz Christy. Liz Christy told The Northern Standard: “It was a truly great honour to have one of my scarves presented to the New Zealand Prime Minister.”

Monaghan County Council hosted a barbeque at Carrickmacross Civic Offices recently, in memory of their late colleague Katrina Coleman Ó Roideáin, who worked in the Tourism Section of the Local Authority. A cheque of the proceeds of €4000.77 was accepted by Michael McMahon on behalf of Carrickmacross Cancer Society. Gardai are investigating the cause of a fire which caused extensive damage to two unoccupied buildings at Old Cross Square in Monaghan Town on Tuesday evening. The alarm was raised shortly after 5pm and the emergency services were quicly on the scene and prevented the blaze from spreading to adjoining properties. The buildings which contained a shop and a private dwelling had been empty for a number of years. Dublin Street was cordoned off while the emergency services dealt with the situation.
