However, nothing quite prepared the spectators heading to Pάirc Grattan on Sunday last, for the heavy defeat they would inflict on a highly fancied Castleblayney team, seeking to get their hands on the coveted Corn Gael Linn for the first time since 2016. Clontibret took the ...

Scotstown, who started with ten of the team that won their fourth straight SFC title last October, made light of the absence of three county players. The suspended Shane Carey and the injured Kieran Hughes were absent for Scotstown, but they have been boosted by the recent return to action of Darren Hughes, who got another 20 minutes of game-time. It was another Monaghan player, Conor McCarthy, who made ...

INNISKEEN 1-17 CURRIN 2-11 Colm Shalvey reports Inniskeen made a winning start to the SFC when they held off a valiant challenge from Currin in searing heat at Aughnamullen last Sunday. Inniskeen looked set for a fairly comfortable win during the first half, with Seán Jones, Andrew Woods and the Meegans causing Currin headaches, but the SFL’s bottom team belied their league form with their second-half comeback that took this game down to the wire. Jack McCarron hit 1-8 to keep Currin in with a chance of a shock win, but Inniskeen, who ...

COLM SHALVEY – COMMENTARY There was plenty of drama in last weekend’s club football championship action, with two games decided by penalty shoot-outs on Saturday. The first of those came in the JFC, where Rockcorry pipped neighbours Aghabog. That didn’t come without controversy, however, as one of the Rockcorry penalty takers hadn’t featured in the game but was apparently given the goahead by officials in Drumhowan. It went right down to the wire in Inniskeen, where it took ‘sudden death’ in the shoot-out for Donaghmoyne to see off fellow south-Monaghan side ...

More importantly for the Farney ladies, Monaghan secured their SFC status for 2020. A great end to a disappointing league campaign which saw them relegated from the top flight. Reacting to their 3-18 to 1-10 victory over the Leinster girls, Monaghan captain Cora Courtney agreed that there was no cloud to be seen on the silver lining that 2019…

COLM SHALVEY COMMENTARY The club football championship season got underway with a full round of fixtures in the Universal Graphics JFC last weekend. Drumhowan got the competition up and running on Friday with a five-point win over Rockcorry. Firsthalf goals from Patrick Quinn, Aidan Duffy and Kevin Mooney saw Drumhowan race into a big lead and although Rock competed better in the second half, they couldn’t bridge the gap. Two of the games over the weekend made a mockery of the league standings, starting with Scotstown’s win over Aghabog at Gavan ...

CASTLEBLAYNEY 1-20 TRUAGH 1-10 John Graham reports A sharper, more experienced Castleblayney retained their Senior Hurling Championship title at the expense of first timers Truagh to complete a three in a row of titles and clinch the club’s thirtieth title in all, when they proved that little bit more streetwise than a Truagh team who were not lacking an effort but did not have the experienced players that ultimately made the difference for the reigning champions. Truagh, to their credit, though were not overawed by the occasion and got off to the best ...
MINOR’S ALL-IRELAND BID CAUSE FOR OPTIMISM FOR MONAGHAN LADIES FOOTBALL
GAA, General News, Sport, Sports News »
CORK 4-11 MONAGHAN 1-08 COLM SHALVEY Monaghan’s minor ladies fell short in their bid for a first All-Ireland MFC ‘A’ title since 1999 when Cork proved too prolific in Tullamore on Bank Holiday Monday. Monaghan started brightly at O’Connor Park, attacking Cork with intent, but they were unable to rack up the scores and that would prove costly in the final analysis. Cork survived a couple of close calls in the opening stages to eventually build up a 1-4 to 0-1 lead that bore little reflection on the general run of play in ...
