To suggest that the comments of Ian Paisley in relation to the Dublin and Monaghan bombings – widely reported in the media last week in the run-up to the broadcast on Monday of a BBC interview with the controversial Unionist politician on his career – might be to the ultimate benefit of those seeking the truth about the atrocity is to risk abrading further the wounds that Mr Paisley’s words undoubtedly aggravated. Nonetheless, it is in our editorial view a legitimate interpretation to put on the renewed attention the ...

RENEWED FOCUS ON DUBLIN-MONAGHAN BOMBINGS AFTER CONTROVERSIAL PAISLEY COMMENTS

Comments made by former Northern Ireland First Minister and Democratic Unionist Party leader Ian Paisley about the 1974 Dublin and Monaghan bombings generated considerable controversy in the past week. A statement made by the 87-year-old on a BBC documentary broadcast on Monday night appeared to attribute some responsibility for the attacks – in which 33 people and an unborn baby were killed – to the attitude displayed to the political situation in Northern Ireland by the Irish Government of the time. Speaking about the May 17 1974 bombings, Mr Paisley said: “I ...

COILLTE INSISTENT THAT €5 ROSSMORE PARK CHARGE WILL REMAIN

The forestry authority Coillte have informed Monaghan Co Council that they are not amenable to waving the €5 admission charge recently introduced for vehicles accessing Rossmore Park in Monaghan Town. MONAGHAN MASTER ST MARY’S STUDENTS AND MUST BEAT FERMANAGH

Monaghan got a first win of 2014 in comfortable fashion in Clones last Sunday, when St. Mary’s University proved no match for the Ulster champions. Monaghan racked up 1-16 (1-14 from play) to get off the mark in the Power NI Dr. McKenna Cup Section B. Just three of the starting team from the Ulster final were on from the throw-in of this one, but it was nonetheless a mature performance from a youthful Monaghan line-up that showed seven changes from the previous weekend’s loss to Derry. St. Mary’s had beaten Fermanagh ...

MONAGHAN PUT ON A MASTERCLASS AGAINST ST MARY’S

Monaghan 1-16 St Mary’s College 0-08 By JOHN GRAHAM After losing by four points to Derry in their opening game Monaghan needed a victory over St Mary’s College if they were to maintain any interest in this year’s Power Northern Ireland Dr McKenna Cup but the result of this clash in Clones last Sunday was never really in doubt even from the early stages as Monaghan proved the masters in most positions over the Belfast based students. St Mary’s had caused something of a surprise when they defeated Fermanagh last Wednesday night but on ...

RUNNERS AND RIDERS HIDING THEIR COLOURS FOR NOW

By Kevin Carney Dr. McKenna Cup results will determine the line-up for this weekend’s semi-finals. Right from the time of the draw for the groups, we knew that the winners of Monaghan’s group would play the winner of Tyrone’s group and, after last Monday night when UUJ pulled the pin on their Wednesday night fixture away to Cavan, we knew the Breffni county would be facing the best runner up. Last Sunday, Cavan cruised to a decidedly unflattering 1-9 to 0-5 win over Down in Kingscourt. It was another shot in the ...
