A man from a Travellers background who was arrested for a public order breach in Carrickmacross last Sunday night and who had 118 previous convictions was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment at Monaghan District Court on Monday, in a case where the defendant’s tragic personal circumstances were also outlined.

Carrickmacross staged a strong final quarter to book their place in the semi-final of the Ulster club intermediate football championship at the expense of 14 man Kildress in a game that was played in somewhat blustery conditions in Omagh on Sunday afternoon last. The largest gathering of twins in Ireland organised by the Carrickmacross Lions Club took place last June as part of the town’s Summer Festival Weekend. All roads will lead to Carrickmacross again on June 4th, 2011 when twins, triplets and other multiples will gather to parade through the town and help create a new Irish record for the largest gathering of twins and multiples assembled in one place at the same time.

A CARRICKMACROSS woman was awarded €425,000 in compensation at the conclusion of a seven year legal case which ended in Dublin’s High Court on Wednesday of last week .
Natasha Gartlan of Corrinty, Corduff, Carrickmacross was a back seat passenger in a stolen car which was involved in an accident near Kingscourt, Co Cavan on November 9th 2004.
Ms Gartlan , who was then a fifteen year old schoolgirl, received serious personal injuries including head injuries.

Rates in Carrickmacross will remain the same this year as they were last year, following the formal adoption of the Budget for 2011 at the Annual Rates Meeting of the Town Council on Monday last.
A provision for Gross Revenue Expenditure of €2,446,286 and Gross Revenue Income of €615,899 leaves the amount to be levied from rates at €1,295,041, which will require a General Annual Rate on Valuation of 65.55. This represents a zero percent increase for the forth consecutive year.

Carrickmacross Chamber of Commerce were delighted with the success of Saturday afternoon’s festivities in the run up to the Christmas light switch on, officiated by none other by Santa Claus, ably assisted by Michéal O’Reilly, winner of North East Got Talent 2010.

Members of Carrick’s Lions Club gathered in the Shirley Arms on Monday evening last, to relish the success of the Twinning parade which took place during the Carrickmacross Festival. President Michael Murphy welcomed guests and members of the club to the evening and spoke of the success of the parade and the recognition the local club received as a result of the parade. CROSS-COMMUNITY co-operation and peace-building in the Co. Monaghan border region received a welcome boost this week with the announcement on Monday that the International Fund for Ireland is to allocate a further €4.9 million to a number of groups, including three in Co. Monaghan with projects at Carrickmacross, Clones, and Truagh.
The announcement of this latest funding tranche was made following a meeting of the International Fund body in Sligo.
