CASTLEBLAYNEY CAMOGS GO MARCHING ON AND ON AND ON ….

BY KEVIN CARNEY Back in the early seventies, the late Eddie Murphy was the fulcrum round which camogie enthusiasts in Castleblayney worked their passion for the small ball game with patience and persistance. Eddie founded the camogie club in his native town in 1972 and, along with the sadly also deceased Terry Connolly, also energised gaels in ‘blayney to start up the game of hurling there too. So, it was right and fitting that the Castleblayney girls should visit the Murphy household last weekend shortly after their historic Ulster Junior Championship final ...

MAGHERACLOONE SMASH-AND-GRAB

M’CLOONE 2-15 CLONTIBRET 0-19 BY JOHN GRAHAM MAGHERACLOONE are still in with the chance of taking some silverware for the year after they staged a late smash and grab act in O’Neill Park, Clontibret on Sunday last to heap further disappointment on Clontibret when they denied them a place in the final of the senior football league. Clontibret had already suffered the huge disappointment of losing the final of the senior football championship but for long periods on Sunday last they looked as if they would get some measure of compensation for that ...

CAMOGIE: CASTLEBLAYNEY CAILÍNÍ ARE THE TOAST OF ULSTER

CASTLEBLAYNEY 3-07 MULLAGHBAWN 0-07 BY MARETTA SHERRY CASTLEBLAYNEY scaled new heights for a Monaghan camogie club team when they won the coveted Bridie McMenamin Junior Ulster Club Championship Shield in Aughnamullen last Sunday. A year on from Clontibret losing at this stage of the competition, Blayney won an absorbing final against a more physical Mullaghbawn from Armagh. The sides were evenly matched throughout, until Blayney scored three goals in the last quarter – two from Niamh Brennan and one by substitute Elaine McKernan – to win the game. Mullaghbawn were first off the mark ...

Ballybay’s captain finally graces the county final stage, and leads by example with an imperious performance. by COLM SHALVEY Ballybay reached the Promised Land after 25 years when they deservedly won last Sunday’s Gormley uPVC Senior Football Championship Final against Clontibret in Clones. One of the best players in the county for so long, it took until last Sunday for Paul Finlay to play in a Senior Final, but he made the wait worth it with a trademark performance of composed football. JUNIOR LEAGUE FINAL COULD BE OH SO CLOSE

AGHABOG V CLONES JOHN GRAHAM Reports It is a limited yet a very attractive programme of games in the county this weekend with the final of the junior football league, the replay of the minor football championship division 3 final as well as the semi finals of the intermediate and senior football leagues. Both of Sunday’s Junior Football League finalists suffered early reverses in the junior football championship, Clones defeated in their first outing by Oram back on June 2nd and Aghabog defeated by Eire Og back on June 10th. Clones recovered though ...

CASTLEBLAYNEY CHARGE LATE WITH HANRATTY OUTSTANDING

CASTLEBLAYNEY 0-12 MON HARPS 1-07 BY COLM SHALVEY CASTLEBLAYNEY are Minor Football champions for the first time since 2004 after they finished well to win a keenly-contested Maguire Transport MFC Division One Final against Monaghan Harps at Clones before the senior decider last Sunday. Midfielder Barry Hanratty was the driving force of this win for Castleblayney, particularly when the game was in the melting pot, while David McMahon, Aaron and Ronan McNamara, Fergal Malone and Aidan McElroy also made valuable contributions. The Harps had good performances from full-backs Pauric Murphy, Niall Treanor and Mustafa ...

DOOHAMLET PERFECT WINNING HABIT TO RECLAIM INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP CROWN

BY COLM SHALVEY Two out of three ain’t bad for Doohamlet, who repeated their 2010 McGuigan Builders Intermediate Football Championship Final over Tyholland in Clontibret last Sunday. Doohamlet certainly got it tougher than two years ago, in the second half at least, although they deserved to just shade it overall. The mid-Monaghan men were in total control in the first half and were well worth their five-point interval lead, which should have been more as they also had six wides and an early goal chance saved. Tyholland were a different proposition ...

CLONTIBRET AND BALLYBAY RENEW LONG RIVALRY ON THE BIGGEST STAGE OF ALL

History is written by the victors, they say.. who will get to write the latest chapter in this clash of two of GAA’s traditional titans? by JOHN GRAHAM he pairing for this Sunday’s final of the Gormley uPVC sponsored senior football championship is one that will evoke memories of some of the great county finals in the past although it is a fairly lengthy trip down memory lane as Ballybay and Clontibret last contested the final of the Monaghan senior football championship way back in 1959. That game went ...

DISAPPOINTMENT TURNS TO DELIGHT FOR MAGHERACLOONE

MAGHERACLOONE 2-10 DONAGHMOYNE 1-10 BY JOHN GRAHAM MAGHERACLOONE who were defeated in the final of the minor football league a couple of weeks back made ample amends on Sunday afternoon last when they won the Maguire International sponsored minor football championship division 2 title, the game played as the curtain raiser to the intermediate championship final. In the early stages though it didn’t look all that promising for the Mitchells as it was Donaghmoyne who made the early running and had 1-3 on the board before Magheracloone opened their account. Once they got motoring ...

SCOTSTOWN SHADE IT AFTER EPIC UNDER-16 CONTEST GOES TO WIRE

SCOTSTOWN 2-13 DONAGHMOYNE 1-15 By JOHN GRAHAM The Packie Boylan Cup will spend the winter in Drumhowan for the third time since 2006 after they deservedly held on to edge out Emyvale in the Universal Graphics Junior Football Championship Final last Sunday. Drumhowan’s win was their fifth in all, taking them level with Cremartin at the top of the roll of honour. Emyvale had lost just three times in 20 games this year prior to last Sunday and they went into the final on the back of rattling in 4-18 against Éire Óg in ...
