A family fun day was held by Mulladuff Residents’ Association in Smithborough on Monday to celebrate the completion of a cycle path along the greenway area. Monaghan Integrated Development which managed the scheme granted €20,000 from the Outdoor Recreation Scheme and Ballybay Clones Municipal District provided €13,000, making the total cost of the project €33,000. THE body of a man was recovered from a slurry tank on a farm at Kilcorn, Monaghan, in the Smithboro area shortly after 4pm yesterday evening, as the search continued for a local man who had been missing since Thursday last, 29th August. A meat company that failed to keep a pallet of pork properly frozen was hit with substantial fines at Clones District Court last Friday — where the judge accused the firm of engaging in “economic sabotage”, and a veterinary inspector said it appeared those involved did not “give a toss”. By Cianna McNally Gardai in Monaghan are investigating the theft of gates from two church properties in recent days. Cast-iron gates were stolen from St Mary’s Church, Magherarney, Smithboro between 6pm last Thursday and 9am last Friday morning. Wrought-iron gates were also taken from the Church of Ireland graveyard in Broomfield at some time last Sunday or Monday. A spokesman from Monaghan Garda Station confirmed to the Northern Standard that gardai were following a line of enquiry into the thefts.

Smithboro poultry firm Grove Turkeys Ltd have announced that they will be exporting €3 million worth of Irish turkeys into over 300 Tesco stores in the UK this Christmas. The firm are also recruiting 280 seasonal workers to meet the intensive festive season demand.
