The roadside birth in Smithboro of a baby girl whose mother was en route to Cavan General Hospital has prompted renewed calls for the restoration of maternity services to Monaghan General Hospital. Marie Fay of River Garden, Drumsheeny, Threemilehouse was being driven to the maternity unit at Cavan Hospital by her brother Eamon on Holy Thursday last when she went into labour.
