Roadside birth prompts calls for restoration of Monaghan Hospital maternity services

The roadside birth in Smithboro of a baby girl whose mother was en route to Cavan General Hospital has prompted renewed calls for the restoration of maternity services to Monaghan General Hospital.
Marie Fay of River Garden, Drumsheeny, Threemilehouse was being driven to the maternity unit at Cavan Hospital by her brother Eamon on Holy Thursday last when she went into labour. The vehicle pulled in at the side of the road and she gave birth to her daughter, Mary Kate.
The incident has been described as “unacceptable” by Cavan/Monaghan Sinn Féin TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin, who has asked the Monaghan public to petition Minister for Health Dr James Reilly seeking the return of services to Monaghan Hospital that would allow for the presentation of women in labour there, “rather than face the prospect of a roadside birth with all the risks that entails.”
Deputy Ó Caoláin, his party’s Dáil Spokesperson on Health and Children, told The Northern Standard yesterday that the Fay family were furious that Marie was effectively placed in this situation, which was attributable to the closure of maternity services at Monaghan General Hospital in 2001.
The SF TD, who said he was contacted by the family the following day and asked to highlight the incident, praised the response of Marie’s brother Eamon, who became “an on-the-spot midwife, ably assisting his sister successfully and safely to deliver her little girl, her second child.”
He pointed out that the family had spoken highly of the ambulance crew who arrived within ten minutes of being summoned, and praised the care provided to mother and daughter since their arrival at Cavan General Hospital.
However, he added, considerable anger would be provoked in the wider Monaghan community by the fact that yet another young woman in the county almost at full term had been forced to attempt “the long and difficult journey to Cavan.”

O’ Caolain has absolutely no sway with the HSE just like all local politicians are small fry up in Dublin.
Even when his wife crashed at the hospital gates and had to be taken up to Cavan, he couldn’t even get Mary Harney to give him the time of day.
