A new publication on the 1974 Monaghan bombing was hailed at its formal launch in the Market House in Monaghan Town on Wednesday evening last by Margaret Urwin of the Justice for the Forgotten organisation as an important exercise in both commemoration and reconciliation. The Monaghan Bombing Community Links Project was co-ordinated by local man Brian Clerkin and backed by local Peace III Partnership funding and support. A second public meeting on drugs-related issues held in the Teach na nDaoine Family Resource Centre last Wednesday night saw an enthusiastic response from the local Mullaghmatt and Cortolvin community to the proposal to form a local task force committee to examine ways of addressing the problem. Acting Co Manager David Fallon made the surprise announcement at Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council that he was retiring from local government in December. MARRIED IN THE MARKET HOUSE
Gavin Farrelly and Aoife Bole made history recently when they became the first couple to avail of the civil marriage cremony in the Market House in Monaghan town. A €9.5 capital development at the site of Monaghan General Hospital which will see the construction of a new Primary Care Centre for North Monaghan was announced by the Health Service Executive on Monday.
