Congratulations to Kevin McGrath, a Meath athlete with Monaghan connections. Kevin, who represents Bohermeen Athletics Club won gold yesterday in the 1,500 metres at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Tbilisi, Georgia. Kevin is son of Paula and Eamon McGrath and grandson of Seamus and Bernie McConnon, Old Cross Square. Kevin entered the race with the fastest personal best. He took control with just over 200 metres to go and powered through to win with ease.

National utility Irish Water have announced details of a €3.6 million investment to replace water mains in Monaghan town and Clones. They say the expenditure will improve the water supply enjoyed by 8,000 customers. Working with Monaghan Co Council, the water utility has carried out an assessment of the water mains in both towns to identify the parts of the network most prone to bursts, with the greatest levels of leakage and where water quality issues are most common. While the new artwork erected at the Coolshannagh roundabout outside Monaghan Town did not cost the local authority any money, preparing the site for it entailed expenditure of €10,000, it was stated at Tuesday’s meeting of the Monaghan Municipal District. A new “Stepping Back In Time” street exhibition has been put in place in Monaghan Town in an initiative implemented by Monaghan Co Museum. A total of twenty images of vistas and views of locations in the county capital have been prominently erected in their modern day sites, allowing the viewer to contrast the past appearance of their locale with the present and partake in the time-travel journey of the display’s title. Anyone passing the Coolshannagh roundabout recently can’t help but have noticed construction works on the triangle of ground opposite Grahams, enclosed by the Armagh road, the by-pass and the Ulster Canal Greenway.
