An emergency county meeting has been called for tonight, Thursday in Castleblayney’s Glencarn Hotel in an attempt to stave off a threat to the future of Community Games in Co Monaghan. PEDESTRIAN FATALITY AT KILLYMARLEY

A male pedestrian, believed to be in his 70s, was killed in a road traffic accident at Killymarley on the N2 on the outskirts of Monaghan Town yesterday, Wednesday evening. The fatality occurred at approximately 5.50 pm. Gardaí, ambulance and fire brigade services attended at the scene and a number of traffic diversions were put in place. • Our photograph by Rory Geary shows the accident scene.

By PATSY McARDLE THERE were separate calls this week from a Cavan-Monaghan Dáil Deputy the Cathaoirleach of Monaghan Co Council, and a Carrickmacross Fianna Fáil councillor, for urgent measures to be undertaken for greater traffic control on the N2 Dublin/Derry Road, between Castleblayney and Carrickmacross, after an horrific crash on Monday last in which two lorry drivers were killed. Monaghan Hospital has along with Cavan General Hospital been honoured with a prestigious award for participation in an Irish Heart Foundation initiative to promote healthy dietary habits. As part of the RCSI Hospitals Group, the two medical institutions received a bronze Active@Work award for completing a self-devised, five-week health challenge supported by the Heart Foundation.
