The Gardaí are investigating a number of incidents in the Mid and South Monaghan areas in which copper wire from Eir telecommunications systems has been stolen. A number of such thefts have been detected in the Castleblayney and Carrickmacross areas in recent weeks, with the internal copper wire being removed from its plastic shedding, the shedding being discarded at the scene. A man in his twenties from Castleblayney has died following a two-vehicle collision which took place on the R181 road outside the Mid-Monaghan town early on Tuesday morning. Fionán Callan from Drumlandrick, Castleblayney died at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda from injuries sustained in the incident, which occurred in the townland of Muldumman on the ‘Blayney-Ballybay Road shortly after 6.30 am.
