MEEGAN MAGIC INCHES INNISKEEN TO SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP REDEMPTION AFTER THRILLER

True grit from the Grattans reclaims the Mick Quigley Cup … while Harps command performance captures the Championship Shield. by COLM SHALVEY Last Saturday’s Silver Hill Foods Senior Hurling Championship Final will live long in the memory after Inniskeen produced a storming finish to edge out Castleblayney by a single point. It may have been a game dominated by frees, with Inniskeen captain Ronan Meegan hitting ten of his team’s 13 points from placed balls, but that won’t matter to the Grattans, who have now shared the last four county titles with ...

Maurice McKenna, Alan Lee, Niall Hahessy, Shane Smyth and Robbie Healy were on song for the Harps, while Jason O’Rourke, Aonghus Mac Suibhne and goalkeeper Jamie Guinan were best for Carrick. Carrickmacross were ...

CASTLEBLAYNEY FALL TO POWER PLAY BY INNISKEEN

Inniskeen 0-13 Castleblayney 1-09 By JOHN GRAHAM THE ACCURACY of Ronan Meegan was a crucial factor as Inniskeen wrested the Monaghan senior hurling championship title from the grip of reigning champions Castleblayney in this closely contested if at times quite rough and tumble encounter that was played in somewhat greasy conditions in Clontibret on Saturday evening last. Castleblayney were going for their 28th senior championship title in all and their 14th title in the last 15 years but Inniskeen talisman and captain Ronan Meegan struck with deadly effect in the closing minutes to clinch ...

JOHN IS KING OF ROSSMORE WITH TERRIFIC 106

Rossmore Golf Club was en fete on Sunday night last with the world and his mother there to shake the hand of the man who ran Rossmore ragged and who proved yet again that while form is temporary, class is permanent. John Heffernan won the Captain’s Prize in 2008. This year he recaptured some of his lustre of old to beat the best of the rest in a fantastic competition which did amateur golf in this neck of the woods proud. Congratulations to all and sundry who backed John at the ...

GAA: THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY

By Colm Shalvey Monaghan’s All-Ireland SFC quarter-final defeat against Tyrone at Croke Park on Saturday brought an excellent year to a bitterly disappointing end. The aftermath of the game has been dominated by Joe Brolly’s furious reaction to cynical play by Tyrone and particularly Seán Cavanagh’s foul on Conor McManus as the Monaghan attacker bore down on goal. However, when looking back at it, Monaghan will be disappointed that – despite their best efforts – they just couldn’t replicate the performance that won them the Ulster final against Donegal. Having led by ...
