CARRICK CHARGE

JOHN GRAHAM reports CARRICK 0-11 SEANS 1-07 arrickmacross who were relegated from senior ranks last year got their intermediate championship campaign off to a winning start but they were pushed all the way by a resolute Sean McDermotts in this highly charged and at times robust opening round game in Clontibret on Sunday evening last. Playing conditions were very difficult due to the strong breeze and the heavy rain and this did lead to problems for both sets of players but they compensated with a full blooded ...

IT COULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT AT HEALY PARK

By JOHN GRAHAM When it is examined in the cold light of day this is a game that Monaghan could have won given the trend that the contest took and the prevailing conditions. On the other hand it is a game that Monaghan possibly could have lost by more given that they were forced to play over half of the match with 14 players and there were also a number of Monaghan players who simply struggled to get into the game. The loss of Dick Clerkin some six minutes ...

Star forward to miss out on date with Tyrone

Monaghan’s bid to claim this year’s Ulster SFC title has received a blow with the news that renowned attacker Tommy Freeman will not feature in the June 5th provincial championship clash with Tyrone in Healy Park. The mercurial Magheracloone ace confirmed to The Northern Standard that he is on the cusp of visiting the United States “for at least a couple of months”. The NFL Division Two medallist and county SFC medallist got married earlier this year and it is understood that he will be accompanied Stateside by his new wife. It is ...

MIXED LUCK FOR COLLEGE STARLETS

KEVIN CARNEY reports The creme de la creme of young Monaghan football talent currently mixing it with the best of their peers in Ulster and Ireland experienced mixed fortunes, on and off the field of play, over the past week. Blue chip schools and college players from the county were the focus of attention as honours were dispensed in the white heat of battle and in the cold light of day, far from the madding crowd. On Saturday last, the crack Brock Cup squad from St. Macartan’s College proudly gave their all ...

WIN ISN’T ENOUGH!

MONAGHAN 1-18 MAYO 2-13 JOHN GRAHAM reports Despite recording a dramatic victory over Mayo, their first in the league since 1986, Monaghan are still relegated to division 2 for next season based on the result of their head-to-head meeting with Armagh who also lost last Sunday but whose one-point victory over Monaghan earlier keeps them in the top flight. That left the aftermath of this high scoring and hugely entertaining encounter in sun-kissed Inniskeen giving something of a bittersweet taste in that ultimately it was something of a pyrrhic ...

The last chance saloon beckons

By Kevin Carney Methinks, there’s barely an octave between songs of joy and a grave lament. And by close of business next Sunday, it may be that scoring differences will be all that separates the losers from the winners in division one of this year’s NFL. Confusion doth reign though among the masses. Last Sunday, the dogs in the street were barking out the message that if Monaghan lost to Kerry and Mayo beat Cork, then the Oriel would be relegated. Not so apparently. The upshot of last weekend’s results in division one ...

MONAGHAN’S MISSION

Monaghan go back to Inniskeen this Sunday with one simple fact on their minds, they must beat Mayo to have any chance of surviving in Division 1 for next season, writes JOHN GRAHAM There are a list of permutations as to what the outcome of division 1 can be should so and so do this or so and so do that but the simple truth is that irrespective of what happens at any other venue next Sunday Monaghan have to win to be involved in any discussions when the action is all ...

Monaghan needs to take the scalp of Kerry on Sunday in their fight to avoid relegation

Eamonn McEneaney agreed that Monaghan were going into Sunday’s Division 1 clash with Kerry needing a result as the points in their two final matches are vital in their fight to avoid relegation. “We definitely need two points on Sunday but we also need a couple of other results going our way as well because if Mayo beat Cork then we are almost certainly down. However if Cork beat Mayo we would still have to beat them (Mayo) but the main thing is we have to try ...

A fear that plans by the GAA to channel major funding into the development of the Casement Park stadium in Armagh could mean the “death-knell” for the staging of future Ulster football finals at St Tiernach’s Park in Clones was expressed by Sinn Féin councillor Donal Sherry at Monday night’s meeting of Monaghan Town Council. Speaking towards the conclusion of Monday’s meeting, Colr Sherry said he wanted to sound “a note of caution” in relation to the development plans for Casement Park. He thought it could have implications ...
