Monaghan needs to take the scalp of Kerry on Sunday in their fight to avoid relegation

Eamonn McEneaney agreed that Monaghan were going into Sunday’s Division 1 clash with Kerry needing a result as the points in their two final matches are vital in their fight to avoid relegation. “We definitely need two points on Sunday but we also need a couple of other results going our way as well because if Mayo beat Cork then we are almost certainly down. However if Cork beat Mayo we would still have to beat them (Mayo) but the main thing is we have to try and win these last two matches and that leaves things in our own hands.
It’s certainly in our own hands on Sunday but it’s going to be very difficult. Kerry have improved as the league has gone on and they are one of the teams in any one year that are always difficult to beat.”
If he had a full panel to pick from Eamonn McEneaney would have a number of options in most positions particularly areas where Kerry are strong but he faces the grim prospect of going into Sunday’s match short quite a few of Monaghan’s established players.
“Yes we are more limited then I would like to be but that puts the onus on the other lads to raise their game and compensate.
“It looks at this stage that we could be without Paul Finlay whose shoulder injury hasn’t cleared up and Darren Hughes whose neck is still very sore following the injury against Dublin is extremely doubtful.
“Vincent Corey is unlikely to take any part either having pulled a hamstring and Eoin Lennon is almost certainly ruled out and could be for the next few weeks which is a set back.
“I suppose the one thing their absences underline is that they are all big men physically but it looks as if we won’t have any of them on Sunday and that is a setback. Against that though Owen Duffy who played very well against Cork is back in the reckoning and Damien Freeman is also available.”
