A 3-4 vote defeated a motion tabled by Cathaoirleach Seamus Treanor at Monday night’s meeting of Monaghan Town Council which called on the Minister for Finance and Foreign Affairs “to suspend payment to some Third World countries until there is more accountability and transparency forthcoming as to how this money is being spent.” In moving the motion, Colr Treanor said he was putting it forward because of the serious financial situation the country was in. Monaghan Co Council are seeking a meeting with the Chief Executive of Bus Éireann amid fears that bus services between the county and Dublin are to be drastically curtailed. Monaghan Tourism body have joined in welcoming an announcement earlier this week of an allocation of €471,000 in funding for the development of a town cycle lane and walkway facilities for pedestrians in Monaghan town.
