Monaghan MEP Matt Carthy is involved in a European Parliament initiative aimed at reducing the cost to consumers of conducting transactions using their financial cards. It is believed that the fees banks charge retailers to process their shoppers’ financial card payment could soon be capped across the EU following negotiations between the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, the European Council and the EU Commission. Irish Water is to start installing water meters in County Monaghan in the coming weeks. Advance notification of at least 14 days will be issued to each householder before meters are installed with information packs outlining the details of the installation process. There are no upfront costs for meters and water charges are due to be introduced in Q1 2015, with the first bills issuing in April 2015.   The people of Clones are prepared to fight to keep the Ulster Bank branch in the town. This was the clear message that went out from a well-attended public meeting that was held in the Creighton Hotel last Wednesday evening. GARDA ALERT OVER ATM ‘SKIMMING’ THREATS

GARDAI are advising ATM users to be on the alert for anything suspicious observed at ATM cash dispensing machines throughout Co. Monaghan in the wake of the reported discovery last week of a “skimming device” at one ATM machine in Monaghan town. The illicit device was found at an ATM unit at a major store in the town. It was not immediately clear yet if any cards had been skimmed but gardai were asking anyone who used the ATM in the vicinity of Dunnes’ Stores to keep an eye on their accounts. ...
