GARDA ALERT OVER ATM ‘SKIMMING’ THREATS

GARDAI are advising ATM users to be on the alert for anything suspicious observed at ATM cash dispensing machines throughout Co. Monaghan in the wake of the reported discovery last week of a “skimming device” at one ATM machine in Monaghan town.

The illicit device was found at an ATM unit at a major store in the town.

It was not immediately clear yet if any cards had been skimmed but gardai were asking anyone who used the ATM in the vicinity of Dunnes’ Stores to keep an eye on their accounts. The ATM has being removed for examination.

If anyone seen anything suspicious they are asked to contact Gardai in Monaghan on 047 77200. Gardai say the public should be extra vigilant of potential skimming incidents in the lead up to Christmas.

This is not the first time such skimming machines have been placed on ATM machines in Monaghan as a few years ago money was taken from unsuspecting people. Their skimmed cards and account details were then used to purchase goods in New York, Florida and other area of the United States.
