SINN FÉIN TD’S SHOCK CLAIM – CLONTIBRET TO BORDER ROAD SCHEME COULD BE DELAYED UNTIL AFTER 2033!

Cavan/Monaghan Sinn Féin TD Matt Carthy claimed this week that the Government had effectively placed the major Clontibret to the Border road scheme on the N2 “on hold” – and the project might not be completed until 2033. Deputy Carthy also stated that there was “a worrying lack of transparency over the future of the project”. He was speaking at a meeting of the Dáil’s Public Accounts Committee in response to correspondence from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) which stated that the next steps in relation to the road were “under ...

SATISFIED TOURISMCUSTOMERS Sir, Here is a reflection on a recent visit my husband and I had to Monaghan. After watching a Nationwide programme which featured places of interest in Monaghan I decided to book a mid-week break immediately. We stayed at Lynster House and travelled up from Galway to arrive at our B & B after 2pm. We were greeted by a welcoming hostess, Elizabeth McGuinness, who after showing us to our room gave us a welcome cup of tea and told us of places of interest around the locality. Both ...

MONAGHAN DOMINATES NOMINATIONS IN BEST PLACE TO HOLIDAY COMPETITION

Co Monaghan has so far received 44 nominations in the Best Place to Holiday in Ireland competition supported by the Irish Times newspaper and Bord Fáilte. “The figures for Monaghan are very impressive at this early stage,” said Kieran Garry of GPR Communications which is promoting the competition. “As of last Friday Monaghan was the county which had received the most nominations, almost twice that of secondplaced Co Kerry which was on 23. Meath, Tyrone and Armagh have no nominations and Cavan, Fermanagh and Louth have just 3 or 4. ...

MONAGHAN SET TO MEET MAYO

The condensed nature of the All-Ireland SFC qualifier series increased the chances of the first round featuring some tasty pairings and so it proved when Monday morning’s draw dished up two all-Division-One clashes, including a trip to Castlebar for Monaghan to face perennial contenders Mayo on Saturday week, June 4. It’s as challenging a draw as it could have been for Monaghan, handing them a first-ever SFC meeting with Mayo, although there is a school of thought that it could be what they needed to refocus the minds after the ...

The victims of the 1974 car bombings in Dublin and Monaghan had not been forgotten and the Government would continue to insist that there be “engagement and truth” for the relatives of those who lost their lives on the single deadliest day of the Northern Ireland Troubles, Minister for Justice Helen McEntee told Seanad Éireann on Tuesday last. Minister McEntee was speaking on the 48th anniversary of the bomb attacks in Monaghan Town and the capital, which was marked by a wreath-laying ceremony by Monaghan Municipal District at the memorial ...

Why Monaghan hadn’t seen the Derry game plan coming is one of the questions pondered by JACK MADDEN in his post mortem of Sunday’s Ulster Championship defeat Lightning doesn’t strike twice. In the most Bear Grylls manner possible you adapt. You improvise. You overcome. Obstacles are there to be knocked. Hurdles are there to be cleared. You might stumble, you might fall, but you inevitably get back up. You inevitably learn. Half-time and Monaghan are seven points down to Derry. The same Derry side that held a seven point lead at ...

MONAGHAN SET FOR QUALIFIERS

Colm Shalvey reports Monaghan manager Séamus McEnaney was adamant that his team can still “have a big say” in the championship despite watching their Ulster title hopes slip away with a loss to Derry last Sunday. “We left ourselves with too much to do and in an Ulster championship match, 50-50, you can’t concede three goals and expect to win. We scored 17 points and we would have expected 17 points to win the game for us, but we conceded two very, very soft goals and we’d be disappointed with that. ...
