Stone Panel Commemorated Two IRA Men Killed in Loughgall Attack Michael Fisher Mystery surrounds the complete removal on Monday night of an IRA memorial on the main road between Monaghan and Clogher at Drumfurrer, close to the border with Co. Tyrone. The operation appears to have been well planned and would probably have required some heavy equipment such as a digger and possibly a truck to take away the material. A number of trees that had been planted at the side of the memorial were cut down and the fencing, iron ...

DEAD MAN’S HAND
DEAD MAN’S HAND The message from the Central Bank could not be starker: “A disorderly Brexit would present an enormous challenge for the Irish economy, especially in the near term, and would result in a loss of output and employment compared to a scenario where the UK remained in the EU.” Yesterday’s Quarterly Bulletin assessment from the nation’s financial regulator pulled no punches, predicting 34,000 job losses by the end of the year, and 110,000 fewer jobs over the next ten years, if the outcome of Boris Johnson’s brinkmanship is the ...
AONTÚ WON’T GO TO WESTMINSTER BUT MIGHT GO INTO COALITION
NEW PARTY’S FOUNDER GIVES POSITION ON RANGE OF ISSUES By MICHAEL McDONNELL michael@northern-standard.ie PEADAR Tóibín’s new Aontú party would be willing to go into coalition, but not with Fine Gael, and only if the political partnership was right. And, like the Meath West TD’s former party, Sinn Féin, they would not be taking any seats in Westminster should they get an MP elected in the North. As reported last week, the fledgling political organisation’s election convention at Cootehill’s Errigal Hotel saw local elections poll topper Sarah O’Reilly selected as Aontú flag-bearer in the ...

COLM SHALVEY CORK 3-19 MONAGHAN 2-10 Another strong year for Monaghan’s minor footballers came to an end with last Sunday’s All-Ireland MFC quarter-final defeat against Cork in Tullamore. After retaining the Ulster title, a second consecutive semi-final appearance at Croke Park was on the radar for Monaghan, but a physically powerful Cork side proved too strong on a good day for football in the resurgent Rebel County, who also saw their impressive U-20 side qualify for an All-Ireland Final. Monaghan just couldn’t deal with Cork’s power and pace in several positions and they ...

GAA, General News, Sport, Sports News »
COLM SHALVEY Monaghan’s minor ladies will bid for a first All-Ireland MFC ‘A’ title since 1999 on Bank Holiday Monday. O’Connor Park in Tullamore hasn’t proved to be a happy hunting ground for Monaghan teams in recent years, most recently last Sunday when the male minor team exited the All- Ireland series by losing to Cork, but the ladies will hope to turn the tables on the Rebel County in their decider. Monaghan saw off Meath in a high-scoring semi-final last month to set up a clash with a Cork side ...

Michael Fisher The lack of response from the British government regarding the release of official papers concerning the Monaghan and Dublin bombings in 1974 has been described as deplorable by Fianna Fáil Deputy for Cavan Monaghan, Brendan Smith. He raised the issue in the Dáil last week with the Minister for Justice Charles Flanagan TD, during the committee stage debate on the Criminal Justice (International Co-operation) Bill 2019. Independent Deputy for Dublin Central Maureen O’Sullivan claimed the British authorities were stonewalling on the issue. The following is an ...
