Monaghan Co Council has backed the ongoing campaign to have the decision by Ulster Bank to close its branches in Castleblayney and Clones reversed. Two motions of urgent business which highlighted the significant economic and social impact that the closures would visit upon the towns in question were adopted at Monday’s meeting of the local authority in Carrickmacross. Work is set to start this week on the Threemilehouse flood alleviation scheme after members of Ballybay-Clones Muncipal District signed the contract at a meeting on Monday. The contract, which is worth €112,000, has been awarded to Rockcorry based contractor Samuel Wilkin. An illegal abbatoir was discovered outside Clones in the Analore area on Saturday last. The discovery was made as part of a joint operation by the gardaí and the Department of Agriculture in relation to cattle thefts. Two people are helping gardai with their enquiries in relation to the discovery and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. Clones athlete Denise Toner fresh from her win in the Lenister Masters Indoor Championships traveled as part of a small Northern Ireland to compete in the English Masters Inter Area Challenge at the Lee Valley Indoor Arena in London on Sunday last. WELL-KNOWN Clones-based solicitor Paul Madden has been prohibited from practising and his accounts have been frozen pending an investigation into substantial monies that have been taken from his firm’s client accounts. The High Court was told last week by counsel for the Law Society that Mr Madden had admitted taking almost €1.4 million from clients’ accounts, stating that it was used to pay items including tax bills and office expenses.
