National utility Irish Water have announced details of a €3.6 million investment to replace water mains in Monaghan town and Clones. They say the expenditure will improve the water supply enjoyed by 8,000 customers. Working with Monaghan Co Council, the water utility has carried out an assessment of the water mains in both towns to identify the parts of the network most prone to bursts, with the greatest levels of leakage and where water quality issues are most common. A 34-YEAR-OLD woman who stole a handbag belonging to another customer from a bar in Clones has been warned to stay out of trouble over the next 12 months if she wants to avoid going to prison. At Monaghan District Court on Monday, Petrina Williams of 54 Ardkeen, Cavan Town, Co Cavan, admitted stealing a handbag at Packie Willie’s Bar, the Diamond, Clones on 16th February 2014. As previously reported in The Northern Standard, Shane McLaughlin from Clonkeencole is working towards achieving a place on the national Paralympics team. He is a member of the Irish Wheelchair Association Sports throws section, which incorporates javelin, discus and shotputt. Clones AC European medal winner celebrated at homecoming By Cianna McNally Rapturous applause and cheers greeted Clones Athletics Club member Denise Toner last Friday evening at a homecoming celebration organised in honour of her winning gold in the Women’s 35 Category 800m Final at the European Masters Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland the evening before.
