The Monaghan Municipal District is to seek the views of the local public on the way they would like to see the popular Rossmore Forest Park amenity in Monaghan Town developed in the future.

There is now an enhanced local authority role in the running of the park following the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Coillte.

The Municipal District have a substantial budget to carry out improvements at the amenity, funding from their own coffers recently augmented by grant assistance announced by Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Heather Humphreys TD.

When the matter was discussed at Monday’s Municipal District meeting, Co-ordinator Donal McElwain noted the receipt of grant aid of €115,000 for the upgrade of walking paths and signage at the park. He pointed out that this work had to be completed before Christmas.

He said the Municipal District was currently working on setting up an advisory group in relation to the amenity and was seeking stakeholder representation. A tender was also out for consultants to draw up a master plan for the park and how they would develop it over the next number of years.
