Clontibret 2-09

Magheracloone 0-11

REIGNING champions Clontibret made a winning start to the defence of their senior football championship title when they got over the challenge of Magheracloone by four points but it was a contest that was in the balance until the late stages.

It was a game too that saw Conor McManus pick up an ankle injury after just ten minutes and while he did carry on until half time he was in some trouble and was substituted for the second half but did return to the action later.

It was a game too where Clontibret’s ambitions of making a winning start were helped by Magheracloone having to play all but ten minutes of the second-half with 14 players following the second yellow card dismissal of Gavin Doogan. At that stage Magheracloone had come to terms with a good start by the champions and led by a point at half-time, pushing on to a three points lead in the early minutes of the second-half with Clontibret then bringing it down to the minimum margin by the ninth minute.

The final minute of the third quarter saw Clontibret strike a decisive blow with the goal by substitute Vinny Corey but even then Magheracloone got back on level terms with seven minutes of normal time remaining. That though was as good as it got for the Mitchells as Clontibret registered a second goal through livewire corner forward Ryan McGuigan to set them on the road to victory.

The game started at a cracking pace but turnovers and mistakes were the order of the day …
