The meeting chamber of Monaghan Co Council reverberated with the sound of high-decibel verbal clashes on Monday as Sinn Féin members launched strong attacks on the voting stances adopted by Fine Gael TDs Sean Conlan and Heather Humphreys in a recent Dáil health service debate – and the under-fire Deputies were stoutly defended by their party colleague Hugh McElvaney, who launched an attack of his own on SF Dáil representative Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin. Although much of the invective hurled across the room was lost in the general clangour, some ...

CONAL MCKENNA WINS ULSTER BOXING TITLE

Conal Mc Kenna put in a classy performance in both contests last week, to lift the Ulster 9 county Gold Medal. His first opponent was Declan Duffy from Twins-Towns Belfast; Duffy was a very tall and strong opponent who tried to put Mc Kenna on the back foot from the opening bell. Mc Kenna was having none of it standing toe to toe with Duffy in the first two rounds, before taking control in the third round to win 2-0. In the final Mc Kenna was up against Aaron Coyle ...

CARRICKMACROSS REACH SEMI-FINALS

Carrickmacross 0-11 Kildress 0-8 JOHN GRAHAM reports Carrickmacross staged a strong final quarter to book their place in the semi-final of the Ulster club intermediate football championship at the expense of 14 man Kildress in a game that was played in somewhat blustery conditions in Omagh on Sunday afternoon last. UNITED FINISH OFF LEAGUE WITH BEST WIN OF THE SEASON

Athlone Town 0 Monaghan United 5 Monaghan United finished off their season with an impressive 5-0 win away to Athlone Town and was also their biggest, alas it was not enough to secure them automatic promotion since Cork City defeated Shelbourne and that result meant that both of those teams are promoted. Monaghan now have to take the scenic route in the play-offs against Galway United. Monaghan United welcomed back from suspension the Brennan brothers who started and Keith Quinn who was on the bench. It ...

MONS ON STAIRWAY TO PROMOTION HEAVEN

MONAGHAN UNITED 2 GALWAY UNITED 0 Goals early from Michael Isichei and late from Sean Brennan brought Monaghan United a long way along the stairway to heaven in their Airtricity League promotion/relegation playoff with Galway United at Gortakeegan on Tuesday night – but it’s a job that must be completed at the Terryland Park fastness of the Tribesmen on Friday if the Mons are to dine at the top table of Irish senior soccer next season, writes Peter Hughes. That Monaghan deserve to supplant Galway in the Premier Division was well ...

Sinn Féin Health spokesperson and Cavan-Monaghan TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has called for a primary care strategy to address the shortage of general practitioners and their uneven distribution across the country.  Speaking on a new Bill which opens up to more GPs access to treat patients under the medical card scheme, Ó Caoláin welcomed the Bill but said that it did not do enough to ensure that communities were properly served by GPs. He told the Dáil:  “There is an acute shortage of general practitioners in this State and this is one ...

At some stage during their apprenticeship to the profession, the tyro journalist is usually taken aside by a grizzled colleague and imparted the mantra: “If in doubt, leave out.” The cautionary phrase is a summation of good common sense habits that those who labour productively in the newspaper vineyards soon acquire, often painfully through neglect of its inherent principles. It teaches the need to verify information, separate rumour from fact, and satisfy oneself as to the veracity and reliability of sources. It also embodies the principle of ...

MONS CAN CLINCH PROMOTION AS PRESIDENT HIGGINS LOOKS ON!

Monaghan United’s dream of promotion to the Airtricity League First Division can be realised at Terryland Park tomorrow, Friday night when they enter the second leg of their promotion/relegation play-off with Galway United with a two-goal advantage. Michael Isichei and Sean Brennan struck the goals at Gortakeegan on Tuesday evening that put the Mons in the driving seat in the tie, and they will be reasonably confident – but not complacent – about completing the job over the deciding ninety minutes of the encounter, which kicks off at 7.45 ...
