[…] A crowd estimated in excess of 7,000 thronged the central thoroughfares of Monaghan Town last Sunday evening to enjoy the formal switch-on of the county capital’s Christmas lighting – and send out a powerful message of confidence in the commercial health of the town to banish the building shadows of economic gloom. Santa Claus’s arrival delighted the hordes of expectant children who encircled the Church Square stage – but the venerable gentleman was arguably upstaged by the charismatic presence of X-Factor performer Jamie Archer, whose personal magnetism and powerhouse musical performance sent his legion of young fans, and many in the crowd of more mature vintage, into a frenzy of appreciation. The variety of festive craft stalls ranged about the town centre all reported very brisk business as the Christmas trading season, so vital to the economic well-being of the town, was given a powerful lift-off. Reflecting on the success of the big switch-on this week, organisers Monaghan Chamber of Commerce extended appreciation to Jane Myles for facilitating them with the use of her Church Square premises.  Thanks were also expressed to the St Louis Girls, Gaelscoil Ultan and St Mary’s Boys School choirs whose beautiful rendering of traditional melodies proved one of the highlights of Sunday’s entertainment programme; and to the colourful Samba Band and harmonious Gospel Choir who also contributed to the success of the occasion.
