Co Board facing search for a successor who can bring out the full potential in a new generation. By COLM SHALVEY … It’s back to the drawing board yet again for Monaghan after last Sunday’s All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Round Two qualifier defeat away to Laois, which signalled the end of Eamon McEneaney’s two years in charge of the county’s senior footballers. A brace of first-half goals ultimately proved crucial as Laois saw off Monaghan by 2-12 to 0-12 at O’Moore Park. The first from Colm Kelly sparked debate – even slow-motion ...

OUTSTANDING TEAM DISPLAY BY MONAGHAN

By Brenda McAnespie Monaghan ladies won their third Ulster Senior Football Championship in a row at Clones last Sunay. It has to be said this was another outstanding performance from the Monaghan girls, their pace and movement being first class. It had to be disheartening for Donegal, but as Hugh Devanney said afterwards, they were beaten by an outstanding team on the day and he ranked this Monaghan side as one of the top teams in the country at present. Linda Martin in goals didn’t put a foot wrong. The rock ...

HAT-TRICK OF ULSTER CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES BECKON FOR LADIES

Our senior county ladies will take to the field this Sunday in Clones, hoping to make it a three-in-a-row of Senior Ulster championship titles. Their opponents will be Donegal who had a convincing win over Tyrone in the semi finals. Monaghan did meet Donegal earlier in the league, but Donegal were missing a few regulars that day, notably Geraldine McLoughlin who caused all sorts of problems for Tyrone. The last time they met in the championship was 4 years ago in the Ulster semi final in Healy Park Omagh, when Donegal ran them ...

CAN MONAGHAN RE-LIGHT THEIR FIRE IN PORTLAOISE?

By JOHN GRAHAM The dust has now settled even though all of the arguments and discussions may not have been settled, in the aftermath of Monaghan’s dismissal from the Ulster senior football championship by Down back on June 24th as attention now turns to their trip to Portlaoise on Sunday to see if they can extend their championship season with a run in the qualifiers. This will be a first ever championship meeting between the two counties and as such it lends significance to the occasion but the only ...

BALLYBAY BEST SECOND TIME ROUND

BALLYBAY 1-11 CARRICKMACROSS 0-10 by COLM SHALVEY BALLYBAY made their second chance count with a four-point win over Carrickmacross in their Gormley uPVC Senior Football Championship preliminary-round replay at Clontibret last Sunday. Ballybay have been the highest goal-scoring team in senior football for the last few years and again so far this season and it was one of those three-pointers, scored by Shane McQuillan midway through the second half, which proved crucial here. Both sides made two changes from the drawn game. Ballybay had Paul Finlay and Ryan Wylie back, while Carrick had Stephen Gollogly ...

CLASSY CURRIN STEAL THE LIMELIGHT

CURRIN 2-12 SCOTSTOWN 1-10 by COLM SHALVEY THE RESULT of a packed weekend of championship action was saved for last, as Currin had a sensational win over Scotstown in the Gormley uPVC Senior Football Championship at Clontibret on Sunday night. Rated as 7/1 outsiders before the game, Currin tore up the odds with a stunning performance which gave them a fully-deserved win over a Scotstown team who went so close to winning the county title last year. Currin crowded out Scotstown’s highly-rated midfield sector and with good quality ball going into their forwards, they ...

BACK TO BUSINESS AS USUAL FOR THE MONAGHAN TEAM WHO PLAY LAOIS

Monaghan play Laois who will be the fifteenth county that the Oriel county have played in the qualifiers. by JOHN GRAHAM In the immediate aftermath of Monaghan’s bitterly disappointing loss to Down in the semi-final of the Ulster Senior Football Championship no one in the county, particularly the players and team mentors, wanted to even think about the qualifiers with Eamonn McEneaney acknowledging that day in Armagh that it would be nigh impossible to lift anyone’s spirits for the All Ireland series at that stage. A week later with ...

JENNINGS WIN’S DONEGAL INTERNATIONAL RALLY

Fermanagh man Gary Jennings with Donegal native Neil Doherty on the notes had a memorable victory on last weekends Topaz Donegal International Rally. To make it an even sweeter victory Gary was in a rented Subaru S14 WRC, which he had never competed in before.
