CONTENTIOUS INNISKEEN TRAFFIC TRIAL TO END ON OCTOBER 15 – BUT DAMAGE INCIDENTS AND ABUSE OF STAFF ROUNDLY CONDEMNED BY COUNTY COUNCIL
“Chaos” and “bedlam” had been caused in the South Monaghan village of Inniskeen by a new traffic light system installed on a trial basis at the River Fane Bridge, Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council was told. But the meeting also heard that alleged criminal damage to equipment, verbal and other abuse of local authority and contractor staff members, and the sharing of personal information about a staff member on social media had manifested out of local displeasure over the trial system. Co Council Chief Executive Robert Burns voiced serious concern about these incidents and they were roundly condemned by the elected members present during a lengthy discussion which concluded with agreement to end the trial system’s operation on Wednesday October 15, two weeks ahead of the initial scheduled cessation date. The immediate cessation of the trial had been initially sought by South Monaghan Sinn Féin representative Noel Keelan, who spoke of people being “prisoners in their own homes” as a result of the traffic light system coming into operation, but he accepted the compromise conclusion….
