CO COUNCIL ACTS TO ADDRESS SPEED LIMIT “ANOMALY” ON STRETCH OF FORMER N2
Action was taken at last week’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council to address what was described as “an anomaly” arising from the recent revision of speed limits and which had led to concerns among motorists using a stretch of the former N2 roadway in the Clontibret area. An amendment to the bye-laws governing the Co Monaghan Road Traffic Special Speed Limits was approved which will mean that two stretches of the old Monaghan-Castleblayney Road, the LP3440 between Castleblayney and Annyalla, and the LP3442 between Annyalla and Clontibret, will see the speed limit revert to 80 kph from the 60 kph limit introduced as a consequence of the recent speed limit revisions in the county and throughout the country. The meeting was told that a public consultation process had taken place on the proposed change and no formal submissions were received.
The road in question was part of the old national road running parallel to the Castleblayney by- pass. A default speed limit of 60 kph had been imposed in February but it had now been assessed and it was deemed more appropriate that an 80 kph limit apply. Prior to the delivery of the by-pass this was deemed a national road and was now used as a diversion route if the by- pass was closed. An 80 kph limit was more reflective of the road environment than 60 kph, it was stated in an engineering presentation to the meeting which recommended that the revised speed limit be adopted and noted that both the affected Municipal Districts and the Co Council’s Strategic Policy….
