COUNTY CONFRONTED WITH TRANSPORT CHALLENGES AS COLD SNAP PERSISTS

While Co Monaghan escaped the heavy snowfalls that brought parts of the country to a standstill last weekend, the prolonged plunge in temperatures has created transport challenges and caused a degree of disruption over the past week. The county was coping with “the coldest winter for some time”, Chief Executive Robert Burns stated at Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council. Mr Burns said that since November 12 the local authority gritting crews had been out 36 times, and had carried out double salting operations on roads on a number of those occasions. “We are only halfway through the winter,” the Chief Executive observed. A Status Orange ice and low temperature warning was issued by Met Éireann for Co Monaghan commencing at 6 pm yesterday, Wednesday evening and continuing until 11 am this, Thursday morning.
The overnight temperatures were expected to drop to as low as -8 degrees. A nationwide Status Yellow low temperature and ice warning is now in place until midday on Friday, with Met Éireann cautioning that the arctic conditions “are not going anywhere” and could continue into the coming weekend.
