SKULL FOUND CLOSE TO ULSTER CANAL MARINA IN CLONES
By Veronica Corr
Gardaí have confirmed that a human skull was found close to the Ulster Canal by a member of the public who was out on a walk over the weekend, it is likely that it was unearthed by the recent excavation works in the area. It is understood that nothing else of evidential value was found in the vicinity of the skull. Speaking to The Northern Standard, Chief Superintendent Alan McGovern for Counties Monaghan, Cavan and Louth, commented: “We are working on the basis that it’s historic. The matter is being treated very sensitively, the skull that was discovered will be examined by a State Forensic Archaeologist, which will determine the length of time that the skull was there. The results of this examination will determine what action is taken by An Garda Síochána.”
