Taoiseach Simon Harris and Tánaiste Micheál Martin, alongside Waterways Ireland, yesterday, Wednesday, officially opened Phase 2 of the Ulster Canal redevelopment project following a €28.4 million investment. Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys, Minister for Heritage Darragh O’Brien and Minister for State for Heritage Malcolm Noonan were also there, accompanied by two elected representatives from the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Yesterday, Wednesday was a glorious day, as Mother Nature pulled out all the stops to ensure that Clones and the Ulster Canal Marina were drenched in sunshine. There were people out on the water in canoes and pedalos, and there was even a boat parked in the Marina for good measure. The launch took place in a marquee, but it could have taken place outside. There were even free ice-creams up for grabs and spectators’ sunglasses got an outing too!

The redevelopment project was carried out by Waterways Ireland, the navigational authority for the inland navigable waterways, from August 2022 to June of this year, completing the restoration of 1.5km of the Ulster Canal from Clones to Clonfad.
