Popularity of Monaghan amenity confirmed by Coillte as play park extension initiated

Rossmore Forest Park in Monaghan attracted 357,834 visits in 2023, retaining its No 1 position as the most popular of Coillte’s public park amenities. The continuing national primacy of Rossmore as a visitor attraction added further celebratory glitter to Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys’ visit to the amenity on Thursday last to turn the sod for an extension of the children’s play area. €150,000 from the Community Recognition Fund administered by Minister Humphreys’ Department is being invested in the latest of an ongoing series of enhancements at Rossmore.

Visitor numbers for last year in the region of 258,000 were announced by Coillte’s local area manager Paul Jordan (who confirmed the exact figure the following day at an event at Dartrey Forest Park). Rossmore Forest Park “is still No 1”, he told the guests gathered for the sod-turning ceremony, describing the level of visitors at almost 1,000 per day as absolutely incredible. “This is by no means the last addition to the park that Monaghan Co Council and Coillte will be involved in delivering,” the local authority’s Tourism Officer Dympna Condra stated on Thursday. “Other projects are currently being worked up.” Monaghan Co Council Cathaoirleach David Maxwell, expressing his delight at being present at the event, recalled the official opening of the play park itself five years previously – and a photograph of him descending a slide in the park…
