WAR ON DRUGS INTENSIFIES IN CAVAN/MONAGHAN WITH FORMATION OF DEDICATED UNIT

The Northern Standard met with Garda Chief Superintendent Alan Mc- Govern of Louth Monaghan Cavan Division recently to find out about the strengthened Cavan Monaghan Drugs Unit that is being formed within the constituency. Recruitment towards the unit is at an advanced stage. The dedicated unit will be made of Gardaí of various ranks, who wish to specialise in the area of drug detection. Chief Superintendent McGovern was delighted by the large amount of applications received after the intention to form the unit was announced.
“We have had significant successes in Monaghan and Cavan recently, particularly in the area of large grow houses and cultivation,” the Chief Superintendent confirmed, noting that over the past three weeks, a combined total of half-a-million Euro worth of drugs had been seized in County Cavan over a number of operations — before the specialised Cavan Monaghan Drugs Unit gets up and running. Councillor Sean Gilliland, whom incidentally is a former Garda, took it upon himself to write to CS McGovern to ensure that Cavan and Monaghan would be as adequately covered as Louth, which already has a well-established Garda Drugs Unit: “I formulated a letter to the Chief Superintendent in late Summer, arising out of concerns raised…
