Co Council Cathaoirleach in strong appeal to halt illegal disposal of waste
A strong appeal was made by the Cathaoirleach of Monaghan Co Council on Monday to the Co Monaghan public to refrain from disposing of their waste and litter by illegal means. Speaking at the monthly Co Council meeting, Councillor Seán Conlon appealed to Monaghan people to be more mindful about how they disposed of their rubbish, asking them to use the facilities at the Scotch Corner recycling centre and the bottle banks located throughout the county “rather than taking the easy, lazy and criminal route”.
The Cathaoirleach made his comments as the Council received a presentation from Environmental Awareness Officer Sharon Finnegan and Barry Eaton of the local authority’s Community Development Section on the funding being provided this year under the Environmental Services and Community Development Funds, which assist local communities in promoting, enhancing and developing their local areas and have a strong accent on anti-littering initiatives. In 2023 €70,000 will be allocated by the Council through the Environmental Services Fund to Tidy Towns organisations, residents associations and community groups.
€98,819 will be distributed through the Community Development Fund. The funding schemes were formally adopted at the meeting on the proposal of Seamus Coyle (Fianna Fáil), seconded by Colm Carthy (Sinn Féin). Independent representative Paudge Connolly hailed the funding packages as “money well spent”, describing the initiatives as “the engine that gets communities going”. He thought that individuals and community groups who engaged in voluntary clean-up operations throughout the county should be acknowledged for their work.
