CALL FOR URGENT ACTION AFTER LATTON BRIDGE COLLAPSE
Monaghan Co Council has been called upon to take urgent action to minimise traffic disruption following the collapse of section of a bridge in the Derrygooney area of Latton at the weekend. The matter was raised at Monday’s meeting of the Council by Fine Gael representative Sean Gilliland, who referred to the adverse effect on the local community of the incident and the subsequent road closure. Councillor Gilliland said that the road in question had previously been closed for months while work was carried out to the bridge, and there was “absolute uproar” in the local area at what had happened.
“We are in the middle of the slurry spreading season and I believe the road will now be closed for a number of months,” Councillor Gilliland stated. Referring to funding which the Council had secured under the Bridge Rehabilitation Scheme, Councillor Gilliland said the local authority had to consider if there was a mechanism or temporary measure that would span the dangerous section of the bridge and allow them to keep the road open.
