FUNDING FOR MAJOR MONAGHAN N2 PROJECTS “VITAL CONTRIBUTION TO ROAD SAFETY” SAYS MINISTER
Both the Ardee to Castleblayney and Clontibret to the Border road development projects have been included in the 2023 national road allocations which were announced by Transport Infrastructure Ireland on Thursday last. The Ardee-Castleblayney upgrade is to receive €600,000 to meet current project commitments.
The Clontibret-Border project will get €2.5 million for planning and design, in the form of match funding for a Trans-European Transport Network or TEN-T grant from the EU. Monaghan Co Council has made a funding application to the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility which is being supported by the Department of Transport. A decision on the funding is expected by June this year, the members of Monaghan Co Council were informed at their recent February meeting. The Clontibret-Border scheme had been suspended after it failed to receive TII funding in 2022.
The allocations for the N2 developments were described as “a vital contribution to road safety” by Cavan/Monaghan Fine Gael TD and Government Minister Heather Humphreys when she spoke to the Northern Standard in Threemilehouse on Friday. Minister Humphreys expressed the hope that the allocations would allow work to be expedited on the upgrade of what was a very dangerous stretch of road. She also stressed the importance of the €16.2 million allocation for regional and local roads in the county which was recently announced.
