Co Monaghan roadusers have been advised to exercise continuing caution as severe weather conditions extend into the coming days. A further Status Yellow warning in relation to ice and low temperatures was issued nationwide yesterday, Wednesday and was expected to remain in place until at least midday today, Thursday. Monaghan Co Council advised drivers and pedestrians to be mindful of road conditions and called on the public at large to be “winter ready”. Met Éireann has warned of treacherous conditions on roads and footpaths, travel disruption and potential supply disruption. The forecaster also said that the current spell creates an enhanced risk of burst water pipes and damage to engines, and have also warned of the increased risk to vulnerable members of the community and animal welfare issues that could arise in the cold weather. Many parts of Co Monaghan experienced their first snowfall of the year in recent days with accumulations heavy in places and driving conditions in some rural locations described as difficult.
