FIREWORKS WARNING FROM GARDAÍ AS LOCAL PETS GO MISSING
Reports of pets going missing after being frightened by the setting off of “bangers” and other firework devices in the past week has prompted the Gardaí in Monaghan to issue a pre-Hallowe’en warning and impart advice to parents. “Hallowe’en is a fun time for many but it can be a time of worry for others,” a local Garda spokesperson said this week. “If you are out and about enjoying the festivities please be mindful of the older members of your community who are often subject to great annoyance at this time.
Also spare a thought for pets who may not appreciate the effects of fireworks, which can inflict great distress on them. “Please bear in mind fireworks are dangerous and cause serious injury. The body parts most often injured are the hands and head, and more than half the injuries caused by fireworks are burns. “Fireworks can inflict blindness, third degree burns, permanent scarring and the loss of fingers. “They can also set off intruder alarms, and cause potentially lifethreatening damage to property and motor vehicles if they continue to burn after landing. “Let’s all have a safe and enjoyable time this Hallowe’en.”
The Gardaí have called on parents in Monaghan who discover their children are in possession of fireworks or bangers to confiscate them and hand them into the local Garda Station. “Parents should be extra vigilant during this period and know where their children are at all times,” the spokesperson stated. “Adults should ensure that children are aware of the very real dangers associated with fireworks.” Anyone with information relating to the illegal importation or sale of fireworks was asked to contact Monaghan Garda Station or use the Garda Confidential Line – 1800 666 111.
